About Porowhita

Kia ora and welcome to my creative space. This whole journey started with a simple idea — making soft, colourful rugs for children’s rooms. Ideal use as tummy-time mats, play rugs, cosy little spots for babies and toddlers to sit, explore, and grow. What began as something small and heartfelt quickly evolved into a full-blown love for crafting beautiful home pieces. Now I create rugs, placemats, coasters, and unique textiles that blend warmth, culture, for everyday practicality. Each piece is handmade using fabrics inspired by Indigenous designs from Australia and Aotearoa, stitched in spirals that represent connection and movement. If you’re looking for items that carry story, colour, and a whole lot of heart, you’re in the right place.

I grew up in the small town of Rotorua in Aotearoa (New Zealand), with my whānau roots stretching back to the East Coast, Te Kaha. Those places shaped me — the land, the culture, the people, the sense of connection. For the past 15+ years, I’ve made Perth, Western Australia my home, where me and my family have built our life. Living here has opened my eyes to the richness of Australian Indigenous artwork — the colours, symbols, and storytelling woven through every pattern. That inspiration sits alongside my own whakapapa, influencing the pieces I create today. My work is a blend of where I come from and where I am now, carrying the beauty of both worlds into every rug and handmade piece.

Our Mission

To create meaningful, handmade pieces that bring warmth, colour, and connection into everyday homes. I craft rugs, placemats, coasters, and textiles with intention — blending traditional-inspired designs, practical comfort, and personal storytelling. My mission is to honour the spirit of slow craft while making beautiful, functional items that families can use, love, and grow with.

Our Vision

I envision my rugs becoming a part of early learning environments — classrooms, libraries, kōhanga reo, kindergartens, and play spaces where children can sit, explore, and connect. These handmade pieces are created with comfort, culture, and colour in mind, making them perfect for reading corners, circle time, quiet zones, sensory spaces, and tummy-time mats. My goal is to support learning settings with handcrafted items that feel warm, safe, and grounded, while celebrating the stories and designs inspired by both Australian and Aotearoa Indigenous cultures.
